     What Does “Quality” Really Mean? As a first step, we did extensive research on OEM and aftermarket screens, to pinpoint visual preferences of the end-user. We measured brightness, black brightness, whitepoint color temperature, polarizer transmission, and other factors to rank and differentiate the parts produced by our suppliers. 

IN AN INDUSTRY WITH A CONSTANT INFLUX IN RELIABILITY, DEFECT RATE, AND CONSISTENCY, IT’S IMPORTANT TO ASK: WHAT DOES QUALITY REALLY MEAN? 

     Why set our own specifications instead of using common LCD brands such as Tianma? We tested popular LCD brands side-by-side and across models, and found that each screen looked and performed differently within each group. Each component in a display has an effect on the performance of the part, leading us to ignore specific LCD brands that don’t meet our quality standards.  

     Our screens consist of OEM LCDs, with refurbished components from original assemblies. It is important to note that there is a common misconception in the industry that OEM parts are 100 percent original, or unused, while in actuality, 100 percent original parts are cost-prohibitive for the average end-user. For this reason, quality aftermarket components undergo continuous evaluation to ensure they maintain the quality we promise.


  Component Grade Differences  

  LCD 

• OEM: Original LCD sourced from a factory second-assembly or recycled. 

• High Grade Aftermarket: Designed to perform favorably when compared to an OEM part, with comparable brightness, contrast, response time, and polarizer performance. 

• Value Aftermarket: Selected with cost and basic function as primary concerns. This part has lower performance standards, and is not guaranteed to pass the polarization test.  


  Polarization 

• Polarized sunglasses are used to neutralize the glare from water and reflected light. A film polarizer layer in the sunglasses blocks a majority of light that is not in line with the axis of the polarizer. This removes a lot of incident light which can improve contrast. However, most LCD’s rely on a polarizer in front of the LCD to pass only the intended image from the display. Sunglasses will block visibility of most aftermarket LCD’s at some angle. To avoid this, a special polarizer layer is used on certain LCD’s. 

• OEM LCD’s contain a special polarizer layer. Though difficult to source in aftermarket assemblies, we saw the importance of the polarizer layer, and searched for suppliers that use this high grade part. 


 Glass 

• Oleophobic coating: A surface treatment which resists smudging and has a low surface energy. This makes the surface easier to clean and maintain. Bonding 

• Cold Press: High grade frame-to glass bond process using CNC-applied solvent-based adhesive that better withstands stress such as flexing. All iPhone 6 and newer parts use cold press bonding. 

• Hot Press: A low cost, fast bonding process that uses a heat-sensitive adhesive. The iPhone 5 series and older parts use this bonding method.
